On behalf of the East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Network, I would like to thank the Commissioners for their commitment to promoting and protecting the rights contained in the Charter, and to take this opportunity to raise some of the key issues that have affected human rights defenders in the region and their ability to carry out their work over the past six months.

Burundi: Reopening of Manirumva Murder Trial Tomorrow is Opportunity for Justice
The scheduled reopening of the trial of those accused of murdering Ernest Manirumva, a Burundian human rights defender, is a positive step, said the East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Project (EHAHRDP) and Protection International today. The public hearing is expected to open at 9 am on Friday 30th March at the Tribunal de Grande Instance de la Mairie de Bujumbura.
Eritrea: Human Rights Council Must Increase Attention to Widespread and Systematic Violations
44 countries yesterday called on the Government of Eritrea to end its use of arbitrary detention and torture of its citizens.
